What if all the televisions in America were shut off for a week?
People might go crazy for a few days (or the whole week), but soon pockets of individuals would see how attached they've become to a material possession. A fabricated electronic rectangle that puts a hold on people's lives. Something that removes us from reality at the end of a "long day" only to wake up and face the world again.
It would feel strange to fill the void of television time with discussion about literature or visiting a museum. But then again, those activities are so much more fulfilling and healthier for our minds. Granted, there are some great programs that enrich people's understanding on topics and world views. However, when so much of out lives is filled with what we call "drama", why do millions still watch them for hours every day?
Let's bring conversations back to dinner tables, instead in front of the television set. An enriching discussion will always be far more valuable than the top of the line electronics.
Some friends of mine back home are in the process of launching a program/website to help aid in this process. Check out the website, here. Here's a video with more information.
